The Opportunity
The United States National Airspace System (NAS) is the most complex aviation system in the world, supporting millions of flights each year and serving as the backbone of the global aviation economy. It enables safe and efficient movement of passengers and cargo, supports national defense, and underpins billions of dollars in economic activity across the country.
Yet much of the infrastructure, governance models, and technology frameworks that underpin the NAS were designed for a very different era of aviation—one with fewer aircraft, simpler operations, and far less technological integration. The urgency of modernization was underscored by the tragic DCA crash, prompting the current White House Administration to accelerate efforts to transform the system through the Brand New Air Traffic Control Systems (BNATCS) initiative.
With strong support from the Secretary of Transportation and the FAA Administrator, Congress has provided an initial $12.5 billion down payment to launch this effort. However, an additional $10 billion will be required to fully implement BNATCS and ensure the NAS meets the demands of the future.
Incremental modernization is no longer sufficient.
What is needed is a coordinated industry-led initiative to help define the future architecture for the National Airspace System. - The Aviation Innovation Coalition is the answer!
